Asansol Diocese celebrates Catechists Day

Asansol diocese celebrated solemnly the Catechists Day of Birbhum district on Oct 13, 2019. More than 100 Catechists and Village leaders who were instrumental in bringing faith to the new villages in the district during the last 20 years were thanked, greeted and appreciated during the Concelebrated Thanksgiving Eucharist presided by Fr. Peter Marandi, SDB , former Parish priest of Sacred Heart Church, Joypur. Seven priests including Fr. Shanti Soren, SDB from BOrobahari joined the celebration. The Catechists and Majihardams from Joypur, Ahmedpur, Boropahari, Bolpur, Laghata, Rajnagar also came for the celebration.

Before the Eucharist at Sacred Heart Church Joypur, all gathered around a map of Birbhum district drawn with markings of Christian villages, Chapels and Churches in BIrbhum district. The Catechists and Religious Sisters who proclaimed the Word of God in a particular village were invited to light a diya marking the light of Christ in that particular village. Fr. CK Jacob, SDB, former Parish Priest of Joypur and Boropahari and present Pastor of Azimganj lit the fist Diya on the map. All the Catechists, Majihardams, Religious Sisters and Priests present also lighted diyas in various villages.

Fr. Mangal Tudu, Curate at Ahmedpur challenged the laity to take diyas and light of Christ to the areas where still the Gospel of Christ has not reached. Fr CL Xavier, Parish priest of Joypur, some youth and parishioners took diyas and placed in the areas where the Message of Christ has not reached indicating that they would go forward to proclaim.

Fr. Jacob exhorted the laity to live authentic committed Christian life during the homily. Living our life as per the Gospel is a witness in our villages, he added. Fr. IP Sarto, VG of the Diocese congratulated all the Catechists and Pastoral Sisters for their missionary zeal. He thanked them for their commitment and zeal on behalf of Bishop Cyprian Monis and priests of the diocese. Fr. Sarto specially thanked acknowledging the contribution of Pioneering Salesian Missionaries and CTC Sisters in the area.

All the Catechists and village leaders from Joypur, Ahmedpur, Laghata, Makrampur and Rajnagar were given Certificates of appreciation, Santhali Bible and a Salve to acknowledge their contribution for the growth of the Church in Asansol diocese. Fr. Mangal Tudu elaborated the history of Joypur mission recalling the contribution of former Pastors at Joypur. This celebration was part of the Extraordinary Missionary Month 2019 in Asansol diocese.

Joypur Salesians Frs. Xavier, SDB, Ranchan Biswas, SDB, Christopher Raja, SDB, CTC Sisters Mercy, Daya, Pastoral Sisters of the parish and Mr. John Soren and the staff at Don Bosco Ashram Joypur made all arrangements for the day’s celebration. Joypur the Mother parish of Birbhum district celebrated the Day as Missionary Day.
